Mayor Of Sleepy Resort Town Spark Debate By This Addition To City Streets

When thinking of Ocean City, Maryland, a contentious debate over a hot button issue is usually pretty far out of mind. The resort town is generally regarded as an awesome spot for a family getaway, and its beaches are typically on the top of the list for a great place to have a little fun in the sun.

As AWM shares, Mayor Rick Meehan wanted to do something special to honor members of law enforcement, and he’s found himself in the middle of a debate as a result.

Meehan has had a thin blue line added to one of the main streets in town. It’s painted right in between the familiar yellow lines, and it serves as a simple nod of support to those that keep the town safe. Congressman Andy Harris was among those that thought it was a fabulous idea.

“During these turbulent times, perhaps more than ever, it is imperative that we show support for our law enforcement officers. Your initiative to paint this thin blue line does just that,” Hicks said.

While Meehan’s move was approved by the city council and the majority of the community appears to be on board, others are not sharing the enthusiasm. The Federal Highway Administration has dropped a letter of disapproval to the town.

“We appreciate and understand the efforts by local governments and others that convey support for law enforcement officers, however; the yellow lines down the center of a road are meant to control traffic and modification of that marking could cause confusion, accidents, and fatalities,” the letter reads in part.

Meehan has chosen to ignore the letter thus far, but the town is technically in violation of code due to its modification of the highway line. Add in the fact that some observers take the thin blue line as an inflammatory symbol, and you can be sure that Meehan has had his ears filled up on the issue. Either way, it sounds like he’s standing firm with his simple gesture, and visitors to Ocean City will have no doubt where the shore town stands on the matter.
