Long Haul Trucker Saves Lives Of Others While Spending His Time On The Road

Once upon a time, truck driver Kevin Kimmel knew nothing about the scale of human trafficking. Then, one January morning, everything changed. Kimmel said everything seemed normal at a quiet gas station in New Kent County. That was until he saw an 'unusual' RV parked nearby. He said, "The thing that stuck out was that this was an old RV with black curtains which wasn't very family-ish." The RV drivers turned out to be human sex traffickers.

He saw a young girl appear in the back window for only a moment before disappearing. Thinking it was strange, Kimmel called the local police department. Officers arrived quickly and helped what Kimmel described as a 'female in really bad shape.'

Kimmel had not thought about the incident for a few months until he saw a twenty-year-old victim on the news. He was shocked at how many people are kidnapped and sold on the black market. he said, "[Traffickers] are constantly moving these people. They stay in the darkness. That's why they can't be anywhere too long. But when you're moving them, then you come into my world. If we know the signs and are vigilant then we can make a big piece of this problem go away."

The prevalence of human trafficking in the United States is why some states educate truckers on how to spot human traffickers and victims while on the road. Ohio even requires truck drivers to go through necessary training before they can get their driver's license. Texas Senator Sylvia Garcia, who is in the process of making human trafficking awareness mandatory for any commercial drivers had this to say, "Once truck drivers know what to do, there is an increase [the NHTH] gets in leads. This is leading to more cases being made. I think any help that law enforcement gets in terms of tips that they can follow ... that's great for everybody."

However, some community members and lawmakers argue this isn't enough. They say this is only a 'small part of the puzzle' and more needs to be done.
