Couple Arrested In Horrific Abuse Death Of Their Child

A woman and her boyfriend from the Dallas area are accused of brutally beating the woman's 4-year-old daughter, and the little girl later died from her injuries.

Jeri Quezada, 30, and Charles Phifer, 34, are currently incarcerated in Dallas County Jail, and both face charges of injury to a child.

According to the police report, four-year-old Leiliana Wright was beaten with a belt and a bamboo stick, tied up in a closet and thrown against a wall after the couple found the girl drinking her brother's juice. This incident occurred on March 12th.

Unfortunately, Leiliana passed away later that day after being found unresponsive. The coroner determined that the cause of death was blunt-force trauma to her head and stomach. The autopsy also showed numerous welts from a whip across her back.

It seems that Quezada tried to tell police that her daughter was injured when she fell in the shower, but the little girl’s death was eventually ruled a homicide.

Of note, Quezada and Phifer are known heroin users, and according to court documents, they admitted they had been taking heroin throughout the day Leiliana was beaten.

Quezada and Phifer both already have criminal records. Quezada pled guilty to a burglary charge back in 2010, and Phifer admitted to possession of a controlled substance in 2012 and 2014.

The horrific death of this innocent little girl has come during an ongoing scandal with many people claiming that Texas Child Protective Services had repeatedly overlooked and undeserved numerous cases of child abuse.
Keep in mind that before the girl died, her grandmother Alisa Clakley forwarded photos of bruising on the granddaughter’s face to CPS. When Leiliana died in the care of her mom and her boyfriend, the caseworker and supervisor on her case were fired and a special investigator also resigned.

The heartbroken grandmother was overcome with grief in an interview with a local TV station: "If we had done something sooner, I don't know. I don't know.”
