Robert De Niro Delivers Scathing Criticism Of Trump's America In Commencement Speech

The United States has become a “tragic dumbass comedy” because of “the idiot” in the White House, Hollywood legend Robert De Niro declared Sunday at Brown University’s graduation ceremony.

The 73-year-old actor claimed that “in movie terms” the country used to be “an inspiring, uplifting drama.” According to ET Canada, he blamed President Trump for the “nightmarish” situation that has developed. “We have a president now who is here because he was on one of those (television reality) shows,” De Niro told the graduates. “And you know what, now, you did shake it up, buddy. You shook it up real well. But now we have to get back to reality. And you guys have to do it. That’s all I have to say. Plus us. But you guys. It’s your future.”

“Are you sure you want to do this?” De Niro asked his audience. “Do you have any idea what’s happened to our world in the four years you’ve been here? Well, the country’s going crazy. … Work for the change. Work to stop the insanity. Start now so the class of 2018 will graduate into a better world.”

Fox News noted that the commencement address was not the first time De Niro has criticized Trump. In October, the actor remarked in a video: “He is a punk, he’s a dog, he’s a pig, he’s a con, a bull**** artist, a mutt who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” According to the Daily Mail, the actor also threatened: “I’d like to punch him in the face.” He was referring to Trump having said the same thing about a protester at a campaign rally.

The Huffington Post reported that in April, De Niro ridiculed the president’s plan to reducing government funding of the arts. “I can’t articulate it well enough other than to say it’s ridiculous. It’s idiotic,” the actor told Rosanna Scotto during a “Good Day New York” interview. “(Trump) has sullied the presidency. He’s debased the presidency. It’s just beyond surreal what this guy has done.”

De Niro, who accepted an honorary doctorate-of-fine-arts degree while visiting the Ivy League school, said he keeps a close eye on CNN to stay up-to-date on the president’s outrageous comments and growing scandals. The administration is under fire for its multiple links to Russia. Several of Trump’s associates had contacts with Russian government officials during the presidential race and transition period. Allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian leader Vladimir Putin to tamper with the election are the subject of investigations by the FBI, Justice Department and several congressional committees.

Another actor, Daveed Diggs, also spoke to the graduates. He encouraged them to come up with some new ideas for the country, “because the old ones have made a mess of things.” Diggs received a Tony Award for his performance in the play “Hamilton.”

De Niro has won two Academy Awards during his long career. He is known for his roles in classic movies such as “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull” and “The Godfather II.”
