GOP congressional leaders hope to repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood in the same piece of legislation, according to House Speaker Paul Ryan.
The Wisconsin Republican announced last week that the bill would eliminate the $400,000 in Medicaid reimbursements Planned Parenthood receives annually to provide health-care services to low-income women. While no taxpayer money finances abortions, the government assistance is crucial to the organization.
The Associated Press reported that anti-Obamacare legislation Republicans pushed last year also would have ended Planned Parenthood funding. Cutting off the reimbursements would leave about 400,000 women without access to affordable health care, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Under this year’s Obamacare-repeal bill, the Medicaid money would go to community health centers.
“Defunding Planned Parenthood is dangerous to people’s health, it’s unpopular, and it would leave people across the country without care,” said Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood’s president. “They cannot afford to have basic reproductive health care attacked.”
The AP noted that Donald Trump’s position on the issue is unclear. During his presidential campaign, the Republican nominee acknowledged that “millions of women are helped by Planned Parenthood.” However, he also has added his voice to those demanding the organization’s defunding. Trump, who called himself “very pro-choice” in the past, now claims to be pro-life.
