People are more angry when they hear about white people assaulting African-Americans than when the opposite happens, according to Newt Gingrich.
Breitbart News reported that the former Republican congressman from Georgia, who was speaker of the House in the 1990s, made the racially charged suggestion Thursday during the airing of a “Fox and Friends” show on the Fox News Channel.
Gingrich, referring to a recently posted Facebook video in which four black attackers targeted a white man, declared: “If this had been done to an African-American by four whites, every liberal in the country would be outraged and there would be no question it is a hate crime. So, let’s be clear about this. We are right at the edge of a terrible period, which I know President-elect Donald Trump wants to avoid, of having the deep bitter division in the communities that makes America hard to govern.”
The former speaker was a strong supporter of Trump, serving as an adviser and campaign surrogate. Gingrich, who has made several unsuccessful runs for the Republican presidential nomination, is an outspoken critic of the GOP establishment. Trump reportedly considered him for secretary of state before nominating ExxonMobile CEO Rex Tillerson for the powerful Cabinet position.
