Dan Rather: ‘Anxiety Gripping My Heart’ Over Trump Administration, Russia Scandals

The nation is experiencing a “rapid descent into governmental chaos” because of the controversies swirling around the Trump administration, longtime journalist Dan Rather warned Tuesday night.

AOL.com reported that Rather wrote on Facebook: “I end each of my days with a silent prayer for my country. It has been a ritual for some time, but as of late I feel an anxiety gripping my heart and a sadness permeating my soul that seems, unlike anything I have felt before. As I fall, we fall, even further, I pray again that our constitutional government, the great gift of our founding fathers, will provide a safety net to catch us before everything we hold dear is no more.”

The former CBS News anchor continued: “I see recklessness where we need leadership … and I am deeply saddened. I see politicians putting power and politics over principle … and I am incredulous. I see the press under attack … and I am furious. I see this, and more, so much more … and I am exhausted.” Rather concluded his post by stressing: “Prayer will not be enough. Action, sustained action, will be required.”

The journalist was referring to multiple White House scandals, including the links between Trump associates and the Russian government. The FBI, as well as several congressional committees, are probing allegations that Russian leader Vladimir Putin interfered with the 2016 U.S. election. Federal investigators also are trying to determine whether anyone in the Trump campaign conspired with the Russians in last summer’s cyber attacks on computers used by Democratic National Committee officials and Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta.

Scrutiny of former national security adviser Michael Flynn has intensified in recent days, with further revelations about his Russian connections. Trump forced Flynn to resign in February after it became known that the ex-general had several phone conversations with Russia’s ambassador to the United States in December. Flynn allegedly told the envoy that the incoming administration would repeal sanctions that former President Obama slapped on Russia as punishment for the election meddling.

The president is also reeling from the fallout of his decision to give sensitive intelligence information to the Russian ambassador and Russia’s foreign minister during a May 10 meeting in the Oval Office. Just two days after that story came out, former FBI Director James Comey (whom Trump fired last week) announced that the president had pressured him to end the bureau’s investigation of Flynn.
