Carter Page No Longer Invited To Testify In Russia Probe - Trump Calls "Witch Hunt"

President Trump on Wednesday once again called federal investigations of his campaign’s alleged collusion with Russia a “witch hunt.”

The Daily Mail reported that the president was angry at Democrats for refusing to allow one of his former campaign advisers to testify before the House Intelligence Committee. “So now it is reported that the Democrats, who have excoriated Carter Page about Russia, don’t want him to testify,” Trump tweeted. “He blows away their case against him & now wants to clear his name by showing ‘the false or misleading testimony by James Comey, John Brennan…’ Witch Hunt!” The president was referring to former FBI Director Comey, whom he recently fired; and Brennan, the CIA chief in the Obama administration.

Page is under suspicion for possibly conspiring with Russian officials because of information in a dossier that a former British spy compiled. Investigators have found reasons to discredit the dossier. Page admitted to host Chris Hayes on MSNBC that he met with Russia’s ambassador to the United States last year, but continues to deny wrongdoing.

The ex-adviser claimed in a letter to the committee that he had “learned from your committee staff on this Memorial Day holiday that I might not be immediately afforded the opportunity to address the false or misleading testimony by James Comey, John Brennan, et al, as per our previously scheduled appointment for next week.”

The letter continued: “In the interest of finally providing the American people with some accurate information at long last, I hope that we can proceed with this straight dialogue soon. … I would eagerly welcome the chance to speak with the committee to help finally set the record straight following the false evidence, illegal activities as well as other lies distributed by certain politically motivated suspects in coordination with the Obama administration, which defamed me and other Americans.”

Page, who was scheduled to testify until the committee’s top-ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, revoked the invitation, accused Brennan of demonstrating an “apparent disregard for truthful information.” He wrote: “It has grown more important than ever that I be afforded the opportunity to explain the truth; in particular, regarding all of the associated nonsensical lies stated specifically against me during the recent testimony by various senior Obama administration appointees. For this reason, I hope that my future testimony might be allowed.”

Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s former campaign manager, told Fox News: “If there was any information that (Page) had which was relevant – which there isn’t – obviously, the Senate and other inquiries would want to have that conversation with him. But the bottom line is there’s no collusion. There’s never been collusion. This is clearly something that, as they continue to look into, there is no evidence that anything ever took place that was inappropriate or wrong; not by the president, not by the candidate, not by the campaign or anybody else. And so it sounds like their case is starting to fall apart before it even begins.”

Page is one of many Trump associates who had contacts with Russian officials during the 2016 presidential race. The FBI, Justice Department and several congressional committees are conducting investigations.
