It’s not often that humans get to interact up close and personal with a humpback whale, and this rare encounter is being hailed as one of the most amazing of all time. As SFGate shares, it all started when a crab fisherman off the coast of California noticed a whale had become ensnared in some nylon ropes that are used to link crab pots.
The massive creature obviously needed some help, and the alert fisherman contacted the authorities. A rescue team was quickly assembled, and they were in the water soon thereafter.
"I was the first diver in the water, and my heart sank when I saw all the lines wrapped around it. I really didn't think we were going to be able to save it," recalls James Moskito, one of the rescue divers.
It was a female humpback estimated to be 45- to 50-foot and roughly 50 tons. Sounds like she knew the predicament she had gotten herself into, and that she was pretty happy that the rescuers were there.
"When I was cutting the line going through the mouth, its eye was there winking at me, watching me. It was an epic moment of my life," he continued.
Once freed, the encounter continued as the grateful whale seemed to ‘thank’ the divers.
"It seemed kind of affectionate, like a dog that's happy to see you. I never felt threatened. It was an amazing, unbelievable experience," Moskito said.
